Givi Bags!
03/02/12 9:23 PM

Pulled the trigger after a LONG lead time, ordered the Givi bags and mounting hardware from Twisted Throttle today, should be here next week. With gasoline hitting 4 bucks again, I'm going to be 2 wheelin' it most of this year, leave my Avalanche at my shop, and Challenger in the garage except for a once or twice a week. These bags look sweet, and finally I can carry a few things with me on two wheels!

Love my Givi bags. Be carefull, they stick out pretty far. I clipped a gate while making a sharp left hand turn into a parking lot when I first mounted the bags to my 14. Luckily, it was before I painted the bags and I was able to sand the scratch out of the plastic before the primer went on.

Empty they don't add much. Full they do, the front end comes up a little under mild acceleration if you aren't leaning into it.

I clicked my rear shock up a bit, as well as my forks.

I was going to let my Givi E52 top case go with my ZX14, but decided I'd just keep it. I'm painting the top gloss black with Fusion Gloss Black and then Fusion Clear Coat. Admore is sending me the latest version LED kit for it, which adds turn signals.

So for $80 for the LED kit and $20 for the paint, I'll get a decent top case for my Connie.

I found the time today to install 'em, it was raining today, perfect day to do these tasks! I'm back, 36 mpg, and 180 hp, and saddle bags to carry my stuff; perfect!

Er.. I notice that there is a bracket that runs across the rear fender and appears to bolt to it. What do you do if you don't HAVE a rear fender? Just curious.

I made a 'Z" shaped extension plate that I leave bolted to the cross bracket to integrate the bracket with the relocated license plate. When the bags are on, it acts as a fender extension and comes off with the Motech setup. I'll take some pics and post them tonight.

There's 4 attachment points for each frame, the license plate bracket is one of the 4. It is not the 'strongest' point, but, it, with the other 3 have a cumulative net effect. If I was one of you that wanted to look 'cool' and chop off your rear fender assembly and hang your plate under your light, or next to your shock, or, out by your axle, I would fabricate a frame mount where the stock fender assembly was. It would be stronger than the offerings from the factory, but, it would work.

I would definitely make sure the cross brace bolts to something solid. Loaded, the bags will try to shift side to side during turns etc., and if the brace is not tied to something, you could end up with a cracked mount frame.

Did you get SW-Motech, or Givi frames? The Givi prevents you from using a top rack, hence no top case. The SW-Motech attaches differently, and you can still mount a top rack.

Got the SW-Motech frames, didn't know this would allow a top bag too? Nice! Can't fit a helmet in there though, at least not my big block head helmet!

Sw-Motech is the ones that makes the original Kawasaki ZZR1400/ZX14 topcase bracket ;)
You can use the same bracket on the Givis rack, bout some modifications is requierd but not alot.
But the quickmount of the SW is brilient and i whould never have bought the Givi racks and since you have to modifi it to fit it with the topcase bracket i cant understand why any one whould by the Givi.

Here is a link to another thread where I have a list of parts that I used on my 2012 and some pictures that I took as I went through the journey of setting everything up. Its unclear to me exactly what part you are having trouble with . . . Consider posting a picture to help explain . . .

Easy peasy...buy the SW Motech Givi V35 racks, just use the 2006-2011 part, works fine on the 14R. ONLY caveat is that if you are running stock exhaust, you will need to drop the mufflers a bit. My aftermarket Scorpion slip ons clear it fine without it. Love the bags!

Wow, what a beautiful blue sky day. Almost a perty as the bike.

Question? What do you do for chain cleaning and lube every 400 miles? Thanks

I lubed the chains at Whitefish, MT about 1000 miles. If I'm riding wet pavement, everyday. O-ring chains need cleaning at the end of your trip, then a good soak in the lube of your choice. I picked up a can of DuPont Teflon Chain-saver. It works great and keeps rust at bay.

Sorry, this must have gotten away from me.

You can see the extra z-shaped extension here. The top holes that sit behind the lower end of the plate are cut out for easy removal and the cross bracket stays bolted to that.

Twisted Throttle has a couple of videos that show how to install the mounting brackets that the Givi bags attach to, and the related thread has a listing of parts and additional details regarding how to install them: SW Motech Rack with Givi V35 Bags??
